Question
My girl is 5 1/2 yrs old, I find she has rapid heartbeats after walking or running, I can hear the thumping of the heart if I place my hand on the chest. Kindly advice me the number of heartbeats/minute at rest and after exercise for a 5 1/2 year old. 2yrs back an echo was done to eliminate 'murmur. Echo was normal.
Answer
These palpitations are common after exercise even in normal individuals without a heart disease. The resting pulse for a 5 and half year old is between 70-100 beats/min. Anything above 100 beats/min in the resting state needs evaluation. If there is doubt, a cardiogram can be taken to rule out a heart arrhythmia which may not be picked up on an echo.
