Question
I took my 3 months old baby girl for vaccination few days ago. As usual, the doctor took her weight, length and head circumference. The doctor said her head circumference is smaller than the "normal size" guide. May I know why is it important to measure baby's head circumference, and if it's smaller than normal babies what does it mean? Will this affect her brain/mental development? Thanks so much.
Answer
The brain of the baby grows to its maximum in the first 2 years of life which is indirectly measured by the head circumference. One needs to monitor the head circumference and if there is a delay, one needs to investigate the cause of her small head such as any genetic syndromes, infections or just primary small head.
