Question
My grandchild is in the hospital for the third time since she was born Oct. 27, 2004. She has been diagnosed with acid reflux. The mother had terrible swelling in her legs and feet during and after pregnancy. She does not eat very healthy. Wouldn't it make since it is the diet that is causing this since she is breastfeeding by bottle? Thanks for any help.
Answer
GER disease does not depend on the diet of the mother nor on breast feeds. The cause is a relaxed sphincter at the lower end of the food pipe. As a result the milk comes up and leads to problems. Since he has had 3 episodes in past 1 month, the best option would be to give him thick feeds (adding corn flour in the milk) and even medications to control the reflux.
