Question
I know about nuerofibromatosis, my mother has the second stage, and my 23yr old brother has the first. Is it safe for me to have children in the future? Since it is genetic I wonder if I have the gene but I don't actually have nuerofibromatasis. Is there any hope that I would not pass this disease on to my future children? Is there anyway to find out if I have this gene in specific? Thank you very much for your time and help.
Answer
It is an autosomal dominant condition. Thus, there is a 50% chance that affected parents can transmit the defective gene to their children. However, if the parent is unaffected, then chance in the child can be due to new mutation.
