Question
My son to be 12 yr old son passed out today, he was walking and just blacked out and fell and hit his head on the wall. When he came to (about 10 seconds later) we asked what happened, he said "why?" I'm thirsty....then he poured the cup of water on his head. I took him to ER, they told blood, urine and blood sugar test...everything was normal. They said it was vaso something...associated with low blood pressure, does this sound correct?
Answer
This kind of fainting attack is commonly due to vasovagal shock that leads to low blood pressure and decreased blood supply to the brain that causes the fainting episode. It usually occurs in hot clammy climate, on prolonged standing and if child is starving. It is usually benign. However one needs to check the blood sugar, do a thorough neurological examination and even do a cardiogram to rule out heart problem before one can label it as vasovagal syncope.
