Question
Mr. 6 yr old son has had an enlarged lymph node on and off since he was 5. I was told this was nothing to worry about as he had heaps of energy and was not unwell. However when he was off color I did notice this node to be more prominent. I have now noticed this node to be swollen all the time now have blood tests for him next week. What will they be looking for doing U/E, liver function and full blood count? How serious can this be?
Answer
Enlarged lymph nodes could be due to viral infections, tuberculosis and ven bacterial infections. If increasing too rapidly or causing pain, one should rule out cancer. However a lymph node that has persisted for more than a year without increasing is unlikely to be cancer and would most likely suggest a viral infection.
