Question
My husband and I are looking into adopting a little girl from China who has a repaired unilateral, partial cleft lip. My question is, she also has what is described as "a split right dental bed"---what exactly does this involve? Her palate is apparently intact and she is doing great in foster care. Would she need both surgery and orthodic work? Any info is appreciated.
Answer
There may be some amount of involvement of the alveolar bone (the bone from which the tooth erupts). Occasionally patients with alveolar involvement may have supernumeray teeth or absent teeth which may require orthodentic treatment later in life.
But even a child without cleft lip may these problems and require orthodontic treatment later in life.
