Question
My daughter is 3 1/2 years old. She was delivered via vacuum extraction. At two weeks of age, she was readmitted to the hospital for failure to thrive (weak suck). Since then, she has not met multiple developmental milestones, and has yet to start talking. I have read about cephalohematomas extensively. Hers has calcified and has not gone away. Could this be causing any of her delays, particularly the speech?
Answer
Cephalhematoma is outside the brain and does not cause any pressure on the brain. It will not lead to delayed milestones. She needs to be investigated for the cause of her delayed milestones. Since she has a vacuum delivery, she may have had some amount of prolonged labor which may have led to some amount of decreased oxygen to the brain.
