Question
3 year old boy is holding back his bowel motions and then does it in his pants. What can be the cause of this?
Answer
The main problem is constipation and improper toilet training. Due to initial hard stools, the child gets pain on passing stool and so hold back the motion as much as possible. Slowly, the loose stool above the hard stool, trickles out and leads to soiling of the pants. Also undue strictness at the time of toilet training may have lead to fear and not going to the toilet seat. You need to deal with this problem patiently and firmly. He may need a laxative to soften the stool and till the stools become normal. Once the constipation cycle is broken, he needs to be trained for social etiquette slowly and with love and care.
