Question
My son has been diagnosed with Renal Tubular Acidosis at 6 months of age. I have read that there are dietary changes that I can make to promote potassium excretion from his kidneys. Any suggestions on what types of foods I can give him?
Answer
In renal tubular acidosis usually the blood potassium content is low. As a result potassium supplement is required. Only in type 4 renal tubular acidosis, is potassium high in the blood. There are no foods that will promote the potassium excretion from the kidneys. However foods rich in potassium are pomegranate, citrus fruits, bananas, nuts, chocolates and coconut water.
