Question
My blood test report at 9.5 weeks of my pregnancy (on 25th may 2004) shows that Robella IgG is 31.6 and the Rubella IgG result is positive. Does this result affect the baby in any way? Please let me know I'm really worried!!
Answer
A positive Rubella IgG does not tell whether it is an acute infection or a past infection. A recent infection can lead to fetal infection and cause congenital rubella syndrome. One can wait and repeat the titres after 3-4 weeks to see if it shows a rising trend. If the Rubella IgG titres are rising, it suggests a recent infection and you may need to do amniocentesis and check the amniotic fluid for rubella to see if the fetus is infected. If the fetus is infected, medical termination of pregnancy can be offered.

The other option is to do a rubella PCR in you right away to determine if you are infected or not. If it is negative, there is nothing to worry about and the positive IgG only suggests a past infection and does not pose any danger to your baby. If it is positive, amniocentesis may be required.

Consult your gynaecologist for the same.
