Question
I had Rubella IgG 31.6 IU/mL at 9.5 weeks of my pregnancy on 25th may 2004. But the results in the TORCH Titre test done on 20th July 2004 which is my 18th week of pregnancy showed these results: Toxoplasma IgG : 2.4 IU/ML Toxoplasma IgM : 1.86 AI (positive) Rubella IgG : 100 IU/ML (positive) Rubella IgM : 0.9 AI C M V IgG : 2.9 AI C M V IgM : 1.32 AI (positive) Herpes II (IgG): 0.14 AI Herpes II (IgM): 0.53 AI What would be the effect of these on my baby? Is it safe to continue the pregnancy in this situation? I am very much worried. Please let me know.
Answer
Your TORCH titres are suggestive of a recent toxoplasma infection, rubella infection and CMV infection. It is very unlikely that an individual has 3 infections at the same time. One may have to recheck the TORCH report to rule out laboratory error. IF required, you can do a CMV PCR, Toxoplasma PCR and Rubella PCR to actually confirm if you have an infection. If it is positive, amniocentesis and checking the amniotic fluid for infection would be required.
