Question
My son swallowed a penny 12/19. We checked his stool for about 3 days and never saw any signs of the penny (we didn't take apart the stool - he's 4, almost 5). Today he spiked a fever (also took a nap) and is complaining of stomach pains. Could this be from the penny or just a stomach virus. He's displaying the classic signs of a virus, but he never complains about a tummy ache. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Answer
Usually the coin should pass out within 7 days. If it does not in 7 days, an X-ray of the abdomen should be done to detect where the coin is. Since he is having pain in the tummy, you can do an X-ray earlier to see where the coin is and is it causing any problems. If required and there is no sign of any obstruction, a mild laxative may be prescribed under a doctor's guidance.
