Question
My daughter has a shunt placement due to hydrocephalus from spina bifida. she is five weeks old and yesterday we noticed her shunt site swelling and we rushed her to the near only for her neurosurgeon who placed it to say there was no malfunction which is wonderful, but the swelling is still there and it's still unclear why to me. She had several test done including a shunt series and a ct. Should I get a second opinion?
Answer
The swelling may be seen due to leak of the fluid or post operative edema. If the shunt is functioning well and there is no redness around the swelling, one should not be worried. The post op edema usually resolves on its own.
