Question
My 10 year old son was just diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. He is only 8 pounds overweight so I was shocked to hear his diagnoses. He is 5 feet tall, so that puts him in the 97th percentile for height. He has never liked meat and refuses to eat it. However, his cholesterol was elevated. He has IBS so raw vegetables are limited. He seems to live on macaroni and cheese (Healthy Choice I might add). Now, that is a problem because of the triglycerides. He went to the doctor because of terrible headaches. His blood pressure was 137/90. I can't get him out of bed and the doctor prescribed narcotics for the headache rather than treating the high blood pressure. Can the headache be due to the elevated blood pressure even though that reading does not seem so high? I am not sure what to do. He is in such pain!
Answer
A high BP can lead to headaches. However one cannot say that your son has high BP based on only one reading. He needs to get his BP evaluated 3-4 times and if it is persistently high, he needs to be treated for hypertension.
