Question
I have two questions about a result of a blood test--a lead screening for my son who was 12 months at the time. 1) His blood level for lead was 8--which I know is within the normal limits--but seems to be on the high side to me should I worry about this? 2) The next result--EP 43 H EP interpretation Elevated the reference range for the EP is 0-34. What is an EP and should I be concerned about his elevated status?
Answer
Erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EP) test is recommended as the screening test for lead toxicity. However it may also be elevated in iron deficiency anemia. Since your son's lead levels are in the normal range, one should rule out nutritional anemia in him.
