Question
My 18 month old son was checked at a WIC office and had hemoglobin 16.4. Could the severe jaundice he had as an infant be the cause?
Answer
His hemoglobin is on the higher side. This condition is called as polycythemia. Infact, polycythemia is one of the causes of jaundice at birth and not the other way round. You must try to find out the cause of his hemoglobin. Rule out a heart disease or a blood disorder. Consult a pediatrician for the same.
