Question
Dengue and DHF seems to be on the rise in Colombo, Sri Lanka, where I live. I am concerned as several of my friends have been diagnosed with it. In the event of one's blood platelet count dropping drastically as a result of dengue, transfusions seem to be the only treatment known in Colombo. I would be grateful if you could provide information on what alternative non blood treatment/medicine is available.
Answer
There is no cure for dengue. In case of bleeding and low platelets, the best option is to give platelet transfusion and maybe even plasma if clotting is also a problem. In severe gastrointestinal bleed vasopressin may be tried to control the bleed if it is leading to shock.
