Question
How common is relentless hand biting in pediatric birth-injury cerebral palsy patients? My son's tonic bite reflex is uncontrollable. He is terrified when his hands come near his face, but cannot stop putting them there and biting his thumbs and forefingers. Please help me.
Answer
This is a behaviour known as self mutilation. It is seen in patients with improper sensation such as sensory neuropathy or mental retardation. This self mutilation can be controlled by bandaging the hand so that he does not hurt himself. He may improve with sensory integration. You may consult a physiotherapist for same.
