Question
Why there is no excessive bleeding from Bone marrow aspirate site in case of ITP?
Answer
In ITP the platelet count is low leading to bleeding tendencies. However the platelets take part mainly in the first phase of clot formation by forming the primary platelet plug. Later on the coagulation factors take over to form a stable clot. As the coagulation factors are normal in ITP, there is not much bleeding following procedures like venepuncture or bone marrow where we can apply local pressure effectively for say 10 minutes or so.
