SKIN PROBLEMS AND TREATMENT IN CHILDREN
Chicken Pox in Children
Chicken Pox in Children
What is the treatment of chickenpox?
Since in most instances, the rash is mild and subsides on its own, no treatment is required. However in severe disease or disease in patients with poor immunity, treatment with acyclovir may be given. Treatment is given for 7 days or until no new lesion has appeared for 48 hours. Soothing agents such as calamine lotion can be applied to the rash and if the rash is too itchy then your doctor will prescribe antihistamines. One should avoid itching as itching can lead to scarring.

How is the diagnosis of chickenpox made?
Diagnosis of chickenpox is usually made clinically. Rarely tests may be required to come to a diagnosis. If required, skin can be biopsied and one can look for chickenpox virus under the microscope. Occasionally, blood tests may be done to come to a diagnosis.
