Question
In Total Parenteral Nutrition in premature infant, do we need to maintain any specific concentration of amino acids?
Answer
Prematures and neonates are particularly at risk with Total Parenteral Nutrition. Cholestasis occurs earlier and has a greater chance of leading to chronic liver disease in surgical patients. Hepatobiliary abnormalities are more likely to develop after a prolonged period of Total Parenteral Nutrition and are less frequent in patients who are also receiving oral feedings. However, yeung et al have stated that there were no significant clinical and statistical differences in biochemical responses in newborn infants <33 weeks gestation who received standardized versus individualized Total Parenteral Nutrition regimes during the first week of life. (J Pediatric Child Health 2003)
