Question
Many parents complain of loose motion in infants at the time of teeth eruption. We have been taught in PG programmes no such association exists. WHAT WAS TOLD TO US WAS CHILD MAY PUT ANYTHING IN MOUTH the time of teething which may lead to loose motion. But considering the significant frequency parent complaint this problem ,I request you to comment on it.(There is an ayurvedic preparation which is sold on counter also for teething associated problem particularly loose motion and few told that it works well!)
Answer
Though in allopathy, there is no correlation between teething and loose motions, according to Ayurveda, during teething there is a break in gums that leads to secretion of some sort of a liquid that is irritant to the intestines and leads to loose motions. It is said that if the mothers regularly clean the baby's gums with a wet clean cloth, then the liquid is not secreted and this does not lead to any loose motions. However there are no studies in allopathy which prove this hypothesis.
