Question
I am pregnant around 6 months, 24 weeks. my last ultrasound was done in the 5th month, all my tests ,including blood urine samples are alright, I am 30 years old. I have a AFP negative test also. During my last visit my Dr. told me that my baby has thickness in nuchal fold, so please I want to know that if AFP is negative, is i.e. possible to have a down's syndrome?
Answer
Rather than a single AFP test, a triple test is more reliable for early detection of Down's syndrome. However it is only 88% accurate. The best way to be sure is to do amniocentesis and karyotype of the amniotic fluid. However now that you are already in the 24th week of gestation, it would be difficult to do amniocentesis. The best thing is to just let the pregnancy go smoothly and not to worry about one abnormal report. Remember positive vibrations and happy feelings have a much more effect on the fetus rather than a laboratory report and undue tension and worry. So just be positive and do not worry.
