Question
How early can viral myocarditis be fatal? Can it result in sudden death? Can it cause bradycardia followed by VT as a terminal event?
Answer
Yes viral myocarditis can be fatal in a few hours if it leads to severe ventricular dysfunction or fatal arrhythmias. Also the arrhythmias may be anything from bradyarrhythmias to tachyarrhythmias to V tach. However before labeling a child as viral myocarditis, one needs to be sure of the viral infection by doing bood viral isolation or myocardial biopsy as inherited cardiomyopathies such as fatty acid oxidation defects, storage disorders may also present in the same manner.
