Question
What is the role of the artesunate in severe malaria? In children how it is superior to all malaria drug. And please send all the particulars of this drug.
Answer
Artimisine group of drugs are the first line drugs now recommended in the treatment of malaria. It has a broad spectrum activity against all stages of malarial parasite as well as all 4 plasmodium species. In falciparum malaria, it is also gametocidal. In P.falciparum, resistance to most of the antimalarials (chloroquine, mefloquine, and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine) has been reported in India and quinine and Artemisinin compounds remain still sensitive drugs.Since Artemisinin derivates have lesser adverse effects as compared to quinine, ACT is preferred for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. For severe vivax or severe falciparum malaria either Artemisinin based combination therapy or quinine based combination therapy may be used.
