Question
Following BCG vaccination a child aged two and half months came with swelling in axilla and measuring around 1.5 cms the swelling is slightly red and seems to be non tender. What should be done? What does it mean? Should we investigate the baby? The baby has no fever and is very healthy and fine with steady weight gain how safe is Bacterium for any patient? Can it be still safely used after asking for history of sulfa reaction for URTI,UTIS and travel diarrhea?
Answer
The child could be suffering from BCG lymphadenitis. Please read the article on BCG vaccination from www.pediatriconcall.com or from the link given below:

Regarding safety of Bacterium - any antibiotic has adverse effects. Even is a patient has negative history of sulfa reaction, he/she may still develop other adverse reactions such as Skin rash: (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, exfoliative dermatitis); renal failure; neutropenia; nausea, vomiting, anorexia, photosensitivity and hepatitis. It is still recommended in children for treatment of UTI, diarrhea, toxoplasmosis and PCP pneumonia. Each antibiotic has to be prescribed under doctor's guidance.
