One and half year old child brought with complaint of passing motion 10-12 times in a day of which 6 -7 episode with loose watery stools but no times he passes blood ore mucus. But mother is very confident that the stool is foul smelling.Should i treat the child with antibiotics?
Answer
Get a stool examination done for 3 consecutive days. Also is the child loosing weight? If yes, rule out giardiasis and cryptosporida. You may also do a stool examination with modified AFB stain.
At this age, also rule out toddlers diarrhea. There is no role of empirical antibiotics.
