Question
Dear Doctor, My son is 9 years old. He had a attack of myositis in March 2005, with 1700 of CPK level. Previously he had rashes on his body often if he had sweets or sugar. He is a premature child, and had an attack of jaundice followed by blood transfusion on 7th day of birth. Now he complains of leg numbness, weakness, pain sometimes. Will physiotherapy be helpful for him? We are pure vegetarians. Would any non-veg food habits help him recover faster? There is no family history of myositis. But my parents had expired due to heart, kidney problems and with diabetes. Please advice Neela (mother)
Answer
His pain in legs and weakness may be due to myositis. Do his CPK levels and check them. Myositis takes time to recover. Myositis in children is commonly due to viral infections. Sometimes it may be due to drugs or metabolic disorders which may lead to recurrent problems.
Also since both your parents had diabetes, get his blood sugar tested.
