Question
My 11 year old nephew has been diagnosed with synovial sarcoma 5 months ago and the one kilo mass has been removed from his abdomen (which is an uncommon site for this kind of cancer). He recently had an ultrasound and the only significant finding was splenomegaly. What does this indicate? What are the chances of recurrence? His attending pediatric oncologist did not have him undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Answer
The only treatment that is indicated for synovial sarcoma is surgery. Radiation and Chemotherapy are not useful. The chances of local recurrence in this disease are pretty high. Hence regular ultrasound, say monthly is recommended. Splenomegaly may not be a part of your nephew's disease, but its progress requires close follow up.
